This paper presents two kinds of seismic response analysis methods for a cylindrical liquid storage tank subjected to a horizontal earthquake by using an energy method. One is for the case in which the liquid free surface oscillation is ignored, the other is for the case in which it is considered. The kinetic energy and the strain's energy of an empty tank shell are calculated by the axisymmetric shell finite element method. On the other hand, the energies of the liquid in the tank is also calculated analytically by assuming that it follows the velocity potential theory. Then, by substituting these values into Lagrange's equation, seismic response analysis methods of the structure-liquid coupled vibration system is derived. The numerical results obtained by this methods coincide with others. Furthermore, they also coincide with the experimental results which were reported in the former papers.
