Quenching of Gamow-Teller strength

Conference · · AIP Conf. Proc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5462013
It is becoming increasingly evident that nuclear Gamow-Teller matrix elements determined from ..beta..-decay and charge exchange reactions are significantly quenched compared to simple shell-model estimates based on one-body operators and free-nucleon coupling constants. Here we will briefly discuss the theoretical origins of this quenching giving examples from three mass regions: (a) in light nuclei near LS-closed shells, such as /sup 16/O and /sup 40/Ca, (b) in heavy nuclei near jj-closed shells, such as /sup 208/Pb, (c) in proton-rich nuclei near shell or sub-shell closures, such aS /sup 100/Sn and /sup 146/Gd.
