The paper presents a low-temperature study of the absorption and luminescence spectra of the Nd/sup 3 +/ activator ion in crystals in the series LnF/sub 3/ as well as the YF/sub 3/. The values of the energies of the Stark sublevels were found for the following levels of Nd/sup 3 +/: /sup 4/I /SUB 9/2/ , /sup 4/I /SUB 11/2/ , /sup 4/F /SUB 3/2/ , /sup 4/G /SUB 7/2/ , and /sup 2/P /SUB 1/2/ . It was shown that based on the spectroscopic data the trifluorides of the rare-earth element fall into two markedly different groups. The first group contains the series LaF/sub 3/NdF/sub 3/, i.e., trifluorides crystallizing in a structure of the LaF/sub 3/ type. The second group contains the series SmF3LnF/sub 3/.
