Gamow-Teller and M 1 strength sums for sd shell nuclei by spectral distribution methods

The spectral distribution method is applied to evaluate the strength sums for Gamow-Teller and isovector {ital M}1 excitations and compared with shell-model predictions for ({ital sd}) shell nuclei.
