This work discusses the connection between the transition point where there is a change in the shape of the micellar size distribution, the conventional critical micelle concentration (CMC), and the cooperative nature of micelle formation as shown in the stepwise association equilibrium constant. The inflection point in micellar size distribution occurs at an aggregation number at which the stepwise association constant hits its maximum. The critical concentration corresponding to the transition in shape of the size distribution is equal to the inverse of the stepwise association constant at its maximum. The conventional CMC is equal also to the inverse of the stepwise association constant, but for an aggregation number somewhat larger than the critical micelle size. 15 referernces.
