An Integrated Two Stage Liquefaction Process (ITSL), which converts coal to an all-distillate product slate, is being performed jointly by CE-Lummus and Cities Service. The process includes first stage coal hydroliquefaction, second stage upgrading in an expanding bed catalytic LC-Fining process, and deashing of coal-derived liquid by the Antisolvent Deashing Process. The process must provide maximum distillate yield, efficient hydrogen management, high thermal efficiency, low hydrocarbon gas yields, and low heteroatom content. The operating conditions and feed properties of all three stages are determined. It is demonstrated that ITSL is capable of achieving greater yields of distillate product and higher product quality than any other direct coal liquefaction process.
