Industrial coal transportation: future availability and limitations

Conference · · Energy Technol. (Wash., D.C.); (United States)

Railroad coal transportation for the industrial user is discussed. The infrastructure for coal movements includes 70,000 hopper cars, and a car building plant that turns out 32 hopper cars a day. The Staggers act deregulation has increased competition and lowered prices. For contracts with small industries without rail access the old concept of central distribution facilities in which coal is shipped by rail to storage and then trucked to the industries is used. This is an example of the willingness of railroad companies to negotiate contracts. Mergers have had a synergistic effect by providing greater single-system efficiency over large geographical areas. As such systems overlap everywhere, competition is tough. Better management is the result of this competition.
