A comparative systems analysis of collecting corncobs

With current high petroleum based fuel prices, farmers are looking elsewhere for fuel. One possible alternative is corn residue, specifically corncobs. Although the technology is available to gasify the corncobs, physically a mobile gasifer is impractical. However, for stationary use, the corncobs provide a viable fuel source. Of three methods of collecting corncobs examined, cob collection in the combine with the grain showed the least capital cost, followed by a cob collection wagon pulled by the combine with greatest capital costs involved in an earcorn collection system.
