Community air quality guides: sulfur compounds

An overview is presented of sulfur compounds in relation to air quality. The combustion of fossil fuels is the main source of atmospheric sulfur oxides. The physical and chemical properties of sulfur dioxide, sulfur trioxide, and hydrogen sulfide are given. The health effects of these pollutants and mixtures of sulfur dioxide and sulfuric acid mist and sulfur oxides and solid particles are discussed. The economic damage caused by these pollutants are evaluated in relation to effects on livestock, vegetation, and materials. Recommended air quality values based on human health effects, effects on vegetation, and on materials are presented.
