Mo(III) complexes in proton-donor media catalyze the electroreduction of compounds with a triple bond (nitrogen, acetylene, acetonitrile, cyanides). The results of studying the electrocatalytic reduction of CO in aqueous solutions of Mo(III) complexes are reported in the present paper. Molybdenum(III) complexes with pyrocatechol catalyze the electrochemical reduction of CO on a mercury cathode in aqueous solution to give C/sub 1/-C/sub 4/ hydrocarbons. The reaction proceeds in a preelectrode layer and is accompanied by the parallel liberation of hydrogen.
