Investigation of flashlamp pumped dye lasers

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:5444877
It was found that the primary loss mechanism in the flashlamp pumped dye laser which was investigated was the less than ideal optical quality of the dye medium. This contrasts with published explanations concerned either with shockwave effects or triplet state effects (also investigated). These published accounts are, however, applicable at various longer pump pulsewidths than the investigated laser (which had a pump pulsewidth of less than 1 microsecond). It was found during the study that if optical quality of the dye medium was improved by using a flow filter with one micron pore size holes, the internal cavity loss was reduced by a factor of two. This finding, plus the work directly on cavity dumping a flashlamp pumped dye laser provides a moderate level of promise for the utility of cavity dumping this type of laser.
