Tensile and shear fracture of an HSLA steel

Conference · · TMS (The Metallurgical Society) Paper Selection; (USA)
OSTI ID:5442209
A single specimen J-integral measurement technique has been used to determine the mixed Mode I - Mode III fracture resistance of a Cu-bearing HSLA steel. By varying the initial crack orientation in a modified compact specimen, several shear-/opening-mode ratios were obtained for two heat treated conditions (peak aged and overaged). Crack initiation toughness values define a fracture envelope in J{sub I}-J{sub III} space. The shape of this fracture envelope may be predicted qualitatively by a theoretical model in which a crack interacts with two super dislocations. The fracture toughness results are related to fractographic observations.
