Title: Identification of energy conservation research opportunities: a review and synthesis of the literature

Abstract

Thirty-eight studies of energy conservation research opportunities are reviewed. The 38 studies chosen for review include many of the major efforts in the identification of energy conservation research and development (R and D) opportunities and provide a representative sample of the types of studies that have been performed. The sample includes studies that focus on specific energy use (e.g., auto transport), as well as studies that focus on specific types of research (e.g., materials science). The sample also includes studies that can be further contrasted in terms of long-term vs. short-term projects, evolutionary vs. revolutionary ideas, generic vs. process-specific activities, and technology base research vs. hardware development. Each of these perspectives contributes toward assuring coverage of the breadth of energy conservation R and D opportunities. In each review the technical or end-use focus is described, the research ideas identified in the study are listed, and a critical summary is given. The reviews also indicate whether the studies present end-use consumption data, estimate potential energy savings, estimate times to commercialization, summarize existing research programs, or describe the identification methodology. In Section 2.0 the various research studies are compared. In Section 3.0 the characteristics of an aggregate list of research ideas aremore » discussed. The characteristics were collected from the research opportunities studies, which are included in Appendix A. Appendix A contains a compilation of energy conservation R and D opportunities arranged by energy end-use applications. Appendix B contains an outline of the format followed in writing the critical reviews of the studies, the individual study reviews, and the extended bibliography of 88 studies that describe energy conservation research opportunities.« less

  • The Federal Government has initiated, expanded, and is accelerating a cost-shaped program with the iron and steel industry to develop innovative, cost-effective programs for new energy-saving technologies. The purpose of this document is to identify opportunities for research and development in the iron and steel industry, giving due consideration to the many barriers that impede the implementation of new technology. These technology sectors also reflect the following three fundamental criteria that DOE has formulated to guide the selection of projects for consideration in this program: the project must have the potential to save energy; the project must be considered cost-effectivemore » when fully developed; when fully developed, the project must be considered reliable and have no negative effect on capacity. Concepts considered for commercial development have been selected because of their significant potential for conserving energy and/or critical fuel forms and on the assumption that they would involve: preparation of proposals by or in conjunction with companies associated with the steel industry, to ensure the practicality of the concept in a steelmaking environment; cost sharing with companies associated with the steel industry; and demonstration of technology that would provide an option for the iron and steel industry to be less dependent on natural gas and distillate fuels. In addition, the program is aimed at stabilizing employment and increasing U.S. strategic security.« less
  • This study attempted to systematically identify, screen and review many of the 27 remaining major studies across the end-use areas. The method used to identify and review the studies, the scope of this effort, the types of studies reviewed, and the R and D opportunities identified are discussed. The actual report reviews are included. The review format and the kinds of information sought from each report are discussed. The general categories of the material are described; the types of information presented are summarized; and gaps in the literature are discussed. A discussion of R and D needs and comments ofmore » the specific needs presented and their temporal and evolutionary characteristics are included. The findings of the review are summarized and the researchers contacted for information are listed.« less
  • The purpose of the study is to develop specifications for using glass cullet in roadway construction. Glass cullet results from collecting and crushing post consumer glass containers. Using glass cullet in roadway construction avoids expensive sorting to prevent color contamination and presents an opportunity to use glass cullet as a construction aggregate and reduce landfill requirements. A number of other states and organizations have investigated the use of glass cullet in various aspects of construction. Specifications for using glass cullet for roadway construction in the state of Texas are being developed in three phases: (1) Literature review and identification ofmore » available sources and suppliers; (2) Laboratory testing; and (3) Specification development. This report covers Phase 1, literature review and identificaton of available sources and suppliers.« less
  • This document is the product of a study conducted by Battelle, Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) to support the overall design effort for a region-wide nonresidential building survey. The study involved review of literature and data sources related to conservation investment decision-making in the commercial sector. It paralleled another study reviewing literature and data sources on the physical aspects of the building and equipment stock in nonresidential buildings.
  • This report reviews the literature on commercial energy end users and energy conservation programs in the United States. It examines the literature on small business motivations and barriers in implementing energy conservation measures, and describes programs aimed at inducing energy efficiency in the commercial sector. The report's premise is that energy programs that take the motivations and barriers of small businesses into account will be most effective. The types of programs reviewed include energy service programs such as audits and workshops, financial incentive programs such as rebates and loans, rate research or incentive programs, and demonstration projects.
