Operators charge ahead in overthrust drilling

Journal Article · · Pet. Eng. Int.; (United States)

Encouraged by higher oil and gas prices and recent estimates of undiscovered reserves as high as 11 billion bbl of oil and 81 trillion CF of gas, operators have revitalized exploration efforts in the US western Overthrust belt on all fronts from Canada to Mexico. The most active plays cover the Montana Disturbed belt, where one oil and one gas field have been discovered, and the Utah-Wyoming fairway characterized by an easterly oil-producing trend and a westerly gas trend. From 1974 through mid-1981, operators had completed 376 wells - 120 producing oil and 41 gas - resulting in 9 oil-field discoveries and 10 new gas fields in the Overthrust belt.
