A new layered cuprate Pb{sub 2}Sr{sub 2}Cu{sub 2}TaO{sub 8}Cl has been successfully synthesized and identified by X-ray diffraction analysis. The compound crystallizes in the hematophanite structure with the space group P4/mmm. The lattice parameters of a = 3.8921(1) {angstrom} and c = 15.3835(4) {angstrom} were obtained by fitting the observed XRD pattern using the Rietveld refinement method. The structure of Pb{sub 2}Sr{sub 2}Cu{sub 2}TaO{sub 8} is build up by [Pb{sub 2}Cl] layer, CuO{sub 5} pyramidal layers, and SrTaO{sub 3} perovskite layer alternatively along the c direction. Although complete CuO{sub 5} pyramidal planes exist in the present compounds, the as-prepared samples are insulating.
