Aspects of the deposition of radioactive and other gases and particles

Some studies at Harwell on the deposition of radioactive aerosols from the air to the ground are described. Much of the work has been concerned with fission products formed in the reactors or by nuclear explosions. Iodine-131 is an important fission product which may be present in vapor form. Other fission products are usually found adsorbed on very small particles (condensation nuclei) and iodine may be in this form also. These particles are too small to have appreciable terminal velocity, but are subject to Brownian motion and also to electrostatic forces, by which means they are deposited.
