Recent major advances in Stark broadening in weakly coupled plasmas have resulted in the subject achieving a very satisfactory standing. Some of these advances are discussed in detail, particularly the progress in electron impact broadening and ion dynamics and an overview of the status and remaining fronts in Stark broadening is given. {copyright} {ital 1997 American Institute of Physics.}
