We present the algebraic proof of a sum rule that is relevant in the theory of Stark broadening of hydrogen and hydrogenic lines. This is accomplished by applying Gauss{close_quote} recursion formulas for the hypergeometric function to the analytical expression of the dipole matrix elements involved in the summation. {copyright} {ital 1997 American Institute of Physics.}
