Coal as a supplemental heat source in sludge incineration

Journal Article · · J. Water Pollut. Control Fed.; (United States)

A project is being conducted in the Twin Cities area to demonstrate the practicality of using such solid fuels as coal, wood, or municipal refuse as a supplemental heat source to reduce fuel costs in sludge solids incineration. Even with very simple feeding equipment, 70% of all auxiliary fuel needed for multiple-hearth sludge incineration of vacuum-filtered sludge can be added as solid-fuel supplement to cake with a solids content of about 20%. While new incineration facilities may choose other forms of oil conservation, solid fuel supplementation appears to be a viable option in the search for ways to cut costs and resource use of existing incinerators.
