Through Sematech, the US semiconductor industry is proposing that the US government join industry in making an investment in research so that US industry can compete on the same level with the foreign semiconductor firms. Rep. J.J. Florio, subcommittee chairman, feels the Government cannot afford to miss this opportunity. At stake is not only the $17 billion semiconductor market, but the key to the entire electrons and information industry. Further, the US future as a leading world economy depends on information and electronics and a strong, competitive semiconductor industry. Witnesses were the following: Harold E.
