Suppression of abnormal overvoltages on an HVDC transmission system

The abnormal overvoltage characteristics of an HVDC transmission system consisting of overhead and cable power conductors and a neutral return wire are analyzed. A dc transient network analyzer is used for the analysis. Measures proposed and discussed for suppressing overvoltages are the use of reverse biased diodes and damping circuits. It is assumed that the rectifier is under constant current control and the inverter is under constant margin angle control. Both converter stations are equipped with dc filters and surge capacitors.
