The rapid expansion of the USSR iron and steel industry in the 1950s and the associated expansion of the coking industry led to higher crude benzol outputs and more processing activity. The Soviet Union became the world's largest producer of benzol for processing, and research was needed on the following topics: 1) process improvements to increase rectification shop outputs and reduce the amount of industrial waste; 2) ways of upgrading crude benzol products and the standardization of benzene hydrocarbons; and 3) the development and exploitation of new processing techniques, including processes and flowsheets for making new products. Systematic tightening of benzene quality specifications made it necessary to improve the refining process. Use was made of unsaturated compounds from sources outside the coking industry as additives. The expansion of the fine organic synthesis industry has brought to the fore research work to extend the range of products derived from crude benzol. This has led to the development and commercial exploitation of processes for the production of reagent-grade benzene, toluene, m-xylene, mesitylene and dicyclo-pentadiene. A major advance in the production of resins from the unsaturated compounds in crude benzol was achieved by a series of investigations into the initiated polymerization process, which produces resins of outstanding quality, with novel properties, and at the same time eliminates corrosion and toxic effluent problems.
