The Minnesota Waste Management Board (WMB) has received proposals from three firms interested in building and operating a waste stabilization and containment facility in the state. The facility will treat and store certain types of hazardous industrial waste. Minnesota is first in the nation to use a voluntary approach to find a location for a hazardous waste management facility. Ten counties are receiving $4000 a month to study the project and identify potential locations. The facility will treat mainly ash from hazardous waste incinerators and sludges generated by circuit board manufactures and metal-plating companies. Each year, Minnesota generates 10,000 to 15,000 tons of such waste, considered hazardous because it contains metals such as lead, chromium, and cadmium. In all Minnesota industries generate about 125,000 of hazardous waste annually.
