The Clean Air Act specifies December 31, 1987 as the deadline for achieving the National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for ozone. As this date is imminent it is evident that attainment of the standard by the deadline will not be possible in many regions of the country. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has projected that more than 50 major metropolitan areas will be out of compliance with the standard by the deadline. In the meantime, the US EPA is in the process of reviewing the ozone air quality standard.
