Flue gas desulfurization: chemical process problems

Many FGD systems at coal-fired generating plants have problems that result in high operating and maintenance costs and, in some cases, poor reliability. Although construction material failures result in lost operating time, chemical process problems cause the more persistent and troublesome maintenance difficulties, such as scaling, inadequate SO/sub 2/ removal, and poor reagent utilisation. In order to define and solve these problems, EPRI has initiated programmes to study wet scrubbers at 6 power plants. Progress on these projects is reported.
