Munsell color value as related to organic carbon in Devonian shale of Appalachian basin: discussion

A recent paper - Munsell color value as related to organic carbon in Devonian shale of Appalachian basin, 1981, AAPG Bull., v. 65, pp. 333-335, by J.W. Hosterman and S.I. Whitlow - is discussed. Hosterman and Whitlow tried to simplify the approximate determination of the carbon content of organic shales on the basis of degree of darkness of shale samples when visually compared with the 10 steps of the neutral-gray axis of the three-dimensional Munsell Color Wheel. The author suggests using the photographic metering system of a single-lens reflex camera to measure reflectance of the shales.
