Shell Chemical Co. will finance and Shell Pipe Line Corp. will build and operate a 254 mi, 12 in. ethylene pipeline that will connect Shell's ethylene manufacturing plants at Deer Park, Tex., and at Norco, La. The system will have a 1.5 billion lb/yr capacity, to be raised ultimately to 3 billion with the addition of more booster stations. Construction will begin immediately and is scheduled for completion by early 1980. The line will be able to move ethylene in either direction between the Mont Belvieu, Tex., and Napoleonville, La., salt domes, which are expected to have a 1981 storage capacity of 600 million lb/yr. By 1981, Shell will have ethylene manufacturing capacities of 2.8 billion lb/yr at Deer Park and of 2.9 billion at Norco, with the addition of a 1.5 billion lb/yr unit at each site. Takeoff points will be located along the pipeline at Organe, Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Lake Charles.
