Shell chemical buys Alabama refinery
Shell Chemical will buy Louisiana Land and Exploration Co.`s (New Orleans) 74,000-bbl/day Mobile, AL refinery for about $55 million. The facility produces 22,000 bbl/day of gasoline and 9,000 bbl/day of chemical feedstocks. Shell says the refinery will provide feedstock to its Norco, LA and Deer Park, TX chemical complexes and refined products to local markets. Shell Oil refines 225,000 bbl/day at Deer Park and 291,000 bbl/day at Wood River, IL, but Shell Chemical wants to lock in local feedstock supplies because of recent high prices. Shell`s 2.5-billion lbs/year cracker at Norco will be expanded by 200 million lbs/year by 1997. The 2.2-billion lbs/year Deer Park unit will be increased by 200 million lbs later this year.
