Conservation seen cutting companies' capital outlays

Companies can eliminate, reduce, or defer many of their capital investments and save money with conservation programs that minimize equipment size, although avoided expenses are difficult to document. For example, energy conservation at a midwest office complex allowed a 40% expansion without requiring an additional boiler. A new cash flow from conservation projects is available when steam use is reduced, a plant converts to coal, or other changes are made that save energy consumption. Several firms describe the new growth they experienced because of these investments. (DCK)
