Liquid fuels from coal: utilizing the Exxon Donor Solvent (EDS) process

Conference · · Energy Technol. (Wash., D.C.); (United States)
OSTI ID:5398040
The Exxon Donor Solvent process of coal liquefaction has recently been brought to a state of commercial readiness. In the EDS process, coal is reacted with a hydrocarbon solvent and fed as a slurry to a liquefaction reactor. A distinctive feature of EDS is the use of a separate reactor for hydrogenation of the recycled solvent. A 250 T/D EDS coal liquefaction pilot plant located in Baytown, Texas demonstrated the operability and flexibility of the EDS process. The problem of rapid coke buildup was overcome by modifying the furnace design. Advances made in the design of reciprocating pumps in slurry service were noteworthy. The reactor system performed well. Fractionation problems were solved by minor modifications. A model for scaleup was developed, and is now available for licensing.
