Eastern Overthrust Belt. Exploratory patterns of thrust belts compared

Oil and gas seekers have found new hydrocarbon provinces in overthrust belts that border the continental margins of North America. These belts exhibit similarities and differences which are being studied in hopes of finding exploratory patterns between the 2 zones. Though these 2 overthrust belts are 1500 miles apart, they each contain a series of thrust faults that have moved portions of rock formations a hundred miles and more from where the rocks were formed. This displacement created additional localized faulting, folding and decollement zones which in some places today serve as structures and traps for hydrocarbon accumulation. At first, these 2 sinous trends offered only high-risk drilling, extremely complex geology and, over the years, continued discouragement to explorationists. Now these 2 overthrust belts are probably the best examples of exploration success in intermittently drilled areas in the nation.
