Abu Dhabi hopes to stay on course

Development and expansion projects under way offshore Abu Dhabi are due to increase the emirate's production capacity by 730,000 bpd by 1984. However, in an environment of production cuts and restrictions, doubt hangs over what output levels the government will set for new developments, particularly Upper Zakum. Currently over $8 billion is being spent offshore Abu Dhabi on the Upper Zakum, Umm Al-Dalkh, and Dalma-Jarnain-Satah developments, plus the Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. (Adnoc) gas gathering scheme and water injection and expansion projects on virtually every existing field. All this development activity is taking place against a backdrop of production cuts. From a peak in 1977 of 1.64 million bpd, Abu Dhabi crude output has been successively trimmed back to its current rate of 1.075 million bpd. The brunt of the cutback has been borne by onshore fields, but there have been significant reductions from the Umm Shaif and Lower Zakum fields off shore.
