There is growing interest in performing biochemical assays on smaller size scales and increasing speed. In the past few years a few groups around the world have demonstrated the ability to perform electrophoretic separations in microfabricated channel structures. Free solution separations of organic dyes, inorganic ions, and amino acids have been performed. In addition, chromatographic separations have been demonstrated on microfabricated devices using electrokinetic pumping. More recently DNA sizing separations have been performed on these microchip structures. Much greater benefit will accrue from microfabricated structures that perform chemical analysis by including addition chemical processing procedures, i.e., building systems that accomplish complete measurement problems. We will describe integrated devices that perform nucleic acid and enzyme assays.
