A simple, monolithically integrated thin-film solar cell array

The advantages of monolithically integrated thin-film solar cell arrays have long been recognized. For cells aiming at terrestrial applications, however, it is imperative that the design of the array be simple and the fabrication process be amenable to low-cost large-scale production. This paper describes a simplified array design in which the thin films are deposited as continuous layers and the integration is achieved through three simple scribing operations. No masking during any of the thin-film deposition processes is needed, and minimal area (<10%) is wasted for interconnections. The application of such design to thin-film CdS/CdTe cells has resulted in an array of 32.5 cm/sup 2/ area with 13 cells in a series. The output of the array under 40.5 mW/cm/sup 2/ of illumination with simulated AM2 spectrum was V/SUB oc/ ca 8.85, I/SUB sc/ ca 21.3 mA, F.F. ca 0.593, and efficiency ca 8.5%.
