Aqueous biphasic systems (ABS) are formed when aqueous polyethylene glycols (PEGs) are salted-out by specific aqueous salt solutions providing two immiscible aqueous layers. We have shown that chaotropic ions prefer the PEG-rich phase and thus partition to this phase. Recently, we have prepared PEG-bound resins that exhibit AB S behavior and have demonstrated their ability to selectively separate TcO{sub 4}{sup -}. This presentation will highlight two areas where ABS may find utility in separations of the pertechnetate anion: high ionic strength solutions such as those found in the Westinghouse Hanford radioactive waste storage tanks, and in the isolation of {sup 99m}Tc for radiopharmacy.
