Aqueous biphasic systems (ABS) are formed when aqueous polyethylene glycols (PEGs) are salted-out by specific aqueous salt solutions providing two immiscible aqueous layers. We have shown that chaotropic ions prefer the PEG-rich phase and thus partition to this phase. Recently, we have prepared PEG-bound resins that exhibit ABS behavior and have demonstrated their ability to separate TcO{sub 4}{sup -} from simulants of high ionic strength solutions such as those found in the Westinghouse Hanford radioactive waste storage tanks. Radioiodine in these wastes is also a concern because of its environmental mobility and long half-life, and thus we have begun to investigate the use of these Aqueous Biphasic Extraction Chromatographic resins (ABEC) to remove I{sup -}. In this presentation we will discuss the results of our systematic investigation of I{sup -} partitioning using ABEC materials.
