Residents and realtors, citizen groups, air pollution and health researchers and agents, and environmental regulators testified at a hearing on the public health risks of exposure to indoor air pollution from radon. Witnesses described how radon affects health, particularly in the increased risk of cancer, and examined appropriate federal response in terms of legislation and environmental policy that would mitigate the problem. Other testimony described steps to take to reduce the potential for radon buildup. A major problem is funding for the necessary studies and risk assessments at a time when budget cuts for environmental protection are accelerating. An appendix with additional responses and submissions for the record follows the testimony of the 12 witnesses.
