Energetic /sup 38/Cl atom reactions in liquid and solid mixtures of 1,1-dichloroethane and o-dichlorobenzene with alcohols and hexafluorobenzene
- Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest
Unusually high yields of /sup 38/Cl-labeled parent compounds were formed in frozen solutions of 1,1-dichloroethane (1,1-DCE) and o-dichlorobenzene (o-DCB) with methanol, ethanol, and hexafluorobenzene by reaction with (n,..gamma..) produced recoil /sup 38/Cl. The yield of labeled compound remained constant over a wide concentration range and was basically the same as that obtained by neutron irradiation in the solid state. It is proposed that a partial separation of the components of the mixture occur and that clusters of DCE and o-DCB molecules form in the frozen solvent matrix. Recoil /sup 38/Cl formed in such a cluster would be more likely to react with other substrate molecules before leaving the cluster to result in yields the same as that for solids. Results of labeling experiments with liquid and frozen samples of C/sub 6/F/sub 6/ containing small amounts of CCl/sub 4/ provided further substantiation for the proposed cluster mechanism of the reaction.
