Energetic /sup 38/Cl atom reactions in liquid and solid mixtures of 1,1-dichloroethane and o-dichlorobenzene with alcohols and hexafluorobenzene

Results of studies of the (n,..gamma..) reactions of 1,1-dichloroethane (1,1-DCE) and o-dichlorobenzene (o-DCB) with methanol, ethanol, and hexafluorobenzene indicated unusually high labeling of the compounds by the recoil /sup 38/Cl. The yield of the /sup 38/Cl-labeled parent compounds remained essentially constant over a wide concentration range and were basically identical to those obtained if the irradiation was carried out in the solid state. It is assumed that clusters or microcrystals of the frozen solutions are formed and that the recoil /sup 38/Cl atoms are restricted to reaction with the substrate molecules contained in the same cluster molecule. The reactions in frozen substrate are more closely correlated with those in crystals where mobility is restricted than with those in liquids or glassy substrates where molecules can compete freely for the recoil atoms.
