This paper describes the technical development of the new Cummins QSK19 diesel engine released for Full Production in January, 1996. The engine program included a major upgrade of the base K19 engine with over 60% of the parts within the engine undergoing significant redesign/improvement, plus the integration of a new electronically controlled high pressure unit injector fuel system. The Cummins QSK19 engine project was a direct outcome of a detailed market and product planning study. The Quantum System K19 (QSK19) would be the first of a new line of Cummins High Horsepower products to better position Cummins in the future in the key market segments of Power Generation, Industrial, Marine and Rail markets.
