Cummins Marine has unveiled three new power ratings for the 12-cylinder version of its KTA38-M2 engine built in Daventry, England. For medium-continuous duty, power is boosted 26% to 984 kW from the previous engine`s 780 kW output. For continuous-duty marine applications the customer can choose between two ratings: 895 kW (an increase of 28%) and 784 kW. Customer benefits include greater fuel efficiency (202 g/kWh bsfc at rated speed for the 895 kW rating), improved reliability and durability, as well as higher horsepower and better performance. Major improvements to the engine include new high-efficiency water-cooled Holset turbochargers; low-temperature aftercooling for greater thermal efficiency and improved fuel economy; and a new gallery-cooled piston to give longer life. 2 figs.
