Principal trends in the production and investigation of coal pitch and pitch coke
Principal trends in the production and study of coal pitch and pitch coke in the USSR and the world, during the period 1958-1980 have been surveyed, with emphasis on coking products used to produce graphitic carbon materials, such as coal pitch binder material and pitch coke hard filler for the production of anode compounds. The literature analyzed has been grouped as follows: 1)Production and use of coal pitch; 2)Properties, composition and structure of pitches and their thermodynamics; 3)Electrode pitch binder; 4)Production of high temperature pitch (135-150/sup 0/C) and pitch coke (carbonization process and properties of the products); 5)Production of pitch coke by slow coking and in a thin bed and 6)Substitutes for electrode pitch binder and pitch coke. Investigation trends are summarized and it is concluded that the problem of producing electrode pitch binder of high quality and pitch coke should be investigated in the areas of the production of pitch, coke and desired products derived therefrom, and the in-use performance of those products.
