This paper determines the mutual catalytic strength of secondary and tertiary amino groups and quaternary amino groups by a comparison of the electrochemical properties of bipolar membranes before and after methylation. Three identical samples (1,2,3) were selected of the bipolar membrane MB-2 for the experiment. The first sample was the control; the second was exposed in ethanol for 72 h, and the third was methylated in a mixture of methyl iodide and ethanol for 24 h and washed free of methyl iodide in ethanol for 48 h. The methylation of the MB-2 membrane leads to a sharp decrease in the rate of dissociation of water and in the equilibrium constant of dissociaton. It can be assumed that in sample 1, the dissociation of water occurs primarily on the tertiary and secondary amino groups, while in sample 3 it occurs on those amino groups that were not subjected to methylation. On all the figures sample 2 occupies an intermediate position between the initial and methylated membrane.
