The current-voltage characteristics of the bipolar region in commercial MB-1 bipolar membranes were calculated from the frequency spectra of impedance and from the transport numbers of hydrogen and hydroxyl ions through the membranes in a 0.01 N NaOH-0.01 N H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ system. The experimental current-voltage characteristics are compared with theoretical characteristics calculated from assumed, known mechanisms of water dissociation in bipolar membranes. An attempt is made to separate the overvoltage in the membrane's bipolar region from the total overvoltage of the bipolar membrane. The acid concentration was determined by potentiometric titration of the solution with sodium hydroxide to pH 7 using automated equipment. The partial current-voltage characteristics of the bipolar region of membrane MB-1 are shown for temperatures of 4, 25, 37 and 50/sup 0/C.
