Cytogenetic study of workers exposed to benzene

Journal Article · · Environ. Res.; (United States)
Fifty-two Pliofilm workers exposed to low levels of benzene (less than 10 ppm) for one month to 26 yr were cytogenetically studied to determine the relationship between low level benzene exposure and chromosomal aberration rate. Results indicate that workers exposed to low levels of benzene show increased rates of chromosomal aberrations. Statistically significant differences were found in the distribution of specific types of chromosomal aberrations. These induced-aberration levels were not related to worker age. Continued investigation of benzene-exposed workers with medical cytogenetic surveillance, environmental monitoring, and lifetime epidemiologic study is recommended. (14 references, 4 tables)
