This book examines how, in practice, the effective verification of various urgently needed arms control treaties-including a comprehensive test ban treaty, reductions in conventional forces, a fissile material cut-off, and a freeze on the development and production of nuclear-weapons-can be achieved. The technical aspects of verifying the various agreements are examined. The effectiveness of any arms control or disarmament treaty will depend on the effectiveness of its verification provisions. Verification is therefore a crucial issue. It is also a controversial issue and will remain so until efforts are made to solve verification problems on an international scale.
