Prudhoe Bay Unit (PBU) is currently undergoing the most active development-drilling program in its 20-year production history. The Prudhoe Bay field was discovered in 1968. Original oil-in-place is estimated at 22 billion bbl. There has been an ongoing development drilling program since the mid-1970`s. First production occurred in 1977. A plateau production rate of 1.5 MMSTB/D was attained in 1979 and lasted until 1988. The field has now been in decline for 8 years. New reservoir penetrations are a key part of development projects undertaken to mitigate the production decline. In the post-plateau phase of PBU, the drilling objective is cost-effective incremental development with innovative techniques to access the field`s remaining reserves. The paper discusses the organization of drilling operations, well design, and completion design options.
