Intelligent completions bring automated reservoir management downhole

When exploiting oil and gas reserves, particularly in offshore or remote fields, extended-reach, horizontal and multilateral wells have enhanced hydrocarbon recovery by increasing drainage areas and contacting more of the productive reservoirs. While it is apparent that multilateral completions can result in both increased production rates and ultimate recoveries from a single well bore, the economic advantages of this technology will not be fully realized until a system is available that can provide operators with real-time control of the commingled production streams from the individual lateral well bores. Although extensive surface automation that controls entire field operations has existed for years, recent technological advances will bring this automation downhole. The intelligent completion combines well control functions with data-gathering capabilities for improved reservoir management.
