The application of superconductive technology to power apparatus is very important in view of the promotion of energy saving and resource saving. Generators using with superconducting field windings have many merits compared with conventional generators, and R and D on these is being actively conducted in various countries in the world. In Japan, the Engineering Research Association for Superconductive Generation Equipment and Materials (Super-GM) has been conducting R and D since FY 1988 on 70 HW class model machines aiming at 200 MW class pilot machine, being commissioned by New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) as part of Moonlight Project Development of Superconductivity Technology for Application to Power Apparatuses of Agency of Industrial Science and TEchnology, Ministry of International Trade and Industry. This mainly describes the development situations of superconducting generators in Super-GM.
