The application of superconductive technology to electric power apparatus, especially superconducting generators is very important from the viewpoint of saving energy and resources. A superconducting generator using a superconductor as the field winding has many merits, i.e. improvement of efficiency, power system stability, operation performance, and reduction of size and weight of generators, etc., compared with conventional generators. This paper describes recent results of the R and D on the 70 MW class superconducting generator (hereinafter called model machine) in Super-GM according to an 11-year period program since 1988.
